The Sons of Dave and Evelyn

Small Rolf and AntThe picture on the left shows Rolf and Anton when very young and apparently not pleased about something, probably me with a camera. Rolf is on the left. In the next one they are older, apparently less displeased. Anton is on the left.

Rolf and Anton I have little first-hand experience of these young men and cannot offer much by way of reminiscence; so most of the hard information comes from others.

Rolf

Born in Capetown in May 1974, not long after the death of our Dad, after whom he was named. Within the next three years or so the family moved first to Randburg, just north of Johannesburg, but within range of the city where father Dave worked, and some years later to Boksburg, on the East Rand about 15-20 miles east of the city.

(I know some visitors to this site are liable to confuse SA with Morocco because they are both in Africa. So explanations are sometimes needed. The places mentioned above are all within the recently-formed district of Gauteng which I believe is derived from a Bantu-language version of 'Gold Town', i.e. Johannesburg, on the Witwatersrand, or Rand - the ridge running east-west where the gold that helped make South Africa fairly prosperous is still mined. Click for a map.)

Seems to have been a fairly unproblematic child (if there is such a thing). Diligent at school and a high achiever. Also a bit of an athlete, breaking his high school's discus record. Went on to study Accountancy, getting a B.Com. Honours degree at my own Alma Mater, the University of the Witwatersrand, usually known as Wits. While at University Rolf continued to find time for sports, including soccer and squash.

Alfred E Neuman (When I visited the family in 1995 I found Rolf reading MAD magazine just as I had done at Wits nearly 40 years earlier. It was as though nothing had changed. I remember someone put up Mad's Alfred E. Neuman - see pic - as a candidate in the Student Representative Council elections, but Alfred was ruled ineligible as he was not a registered student of the University.)

Rolf, graduation

On the strength of his good results was employed by a prestigious international accountancy firm and served three years articles, passing his exam as a Chartered Accountant at the first attempt, a fairly rare achievement. Spent time in 1999 on a US tour, part work experience part holiday.

Then worked in London in accountancy. Occasional visits back home. Also holiday trips to places like Egypt, Budapest, Portugal, Uganda and Bolivia. In 2003 he returned to make his home in South Africa once more. Has job in Johannesburg with an international financial organisation. In 2004 bought a house in Johannesburg. In February 2005 climbed Mount Kilimanjaro together with brother Anton and cousin Paul. Last heard of training hard for the Fish River canoe race in October 2005.

Anton

Born Cape Town Feb 1976 (on same day as his cousin Helga) but grew up mostly in Boksburg. Anton, graduation When younger it seems he caused some anxiety to his parents, over his education at least - was he doing any work, would he pass? Rolf suggests that Anton was a prime exponent of the art of last-minute revision. As it was he cleared all educational hurdles, ending up with a Company Secretary Diploma from the Witwatersrand Technikon.

Clearly has great drive, business sense and people skills. While at College he worked very hard for long hours in an Italian restaurant Miranda rising quickly from waiter to manager. This allowed him to enjoy a fairly opulent life-style. Achieved media fame when the restaurant was robbed by an armed gang. He suffered a broken wrist in this encounter - lucky not to be shot.

Went into the estate agency business. Given some of the more unpromising districts as his beat, viz. low cost black housing estates with all their accompanying problems, Anton quickly became one of his agency's top sellers. Anton & Marina wedding pic

On the most recent information Anton was in partnership with a builder. His partner built the properties - whether low-cost township houses or upmarket residences and high-rise flats - and Anton sold them. And not just in South Africa. Their activities have taken them as far afield as Ghana and Nigeria.

Sporting activities have included playing soccer at school and for a local team, and climbing Mount Kilimanjaro together with brother Rolf and cousin Paul in Feb 2005.

In August 2006 Anton married Marina Nieuwoudt (see wedding pic above). They live in the Johannesburg area.

Evelyn

Born Durban 1939. Both parents born South Africa of Russian Jewish extraction. Confusingly, Ev's maternal grandmother was from Scotland. Parents relocated to Volksrus, a village in Transvaal. Ev stayed with aunt in Johannesburg in order to finish her schooling. Studied Social work at Wits (contemporary of David's brother Paul, though they never met) but did not complete her studies. Also did secretarial course and worked in that field. Married a German immigrant called Gustav but they were divorced eight years later - no children.

Moved to Cape Town where she met David; married 1973. The rest is history. (The pictures show how small were the changes that took place between 1976 and 2002).
Young FamilyOlder Family
Since moving to Boksburg, circa 1984, Evelyn worked as para-professional at Child Welfare Centre, now about to retire. Likes cooking and gardening. Both parents dead. Has a brother, Robert, nine years younger in Jo'burg whose wife died of lung cancer. (So it goes.)

Despite her Orthodox Jewish upbringing Ev drifted away from her faith during her first marriage. Became a Catholic after seeking information on the subject so as to understand Dave's position. Probably the most religiously devout of all the close family. Our mother took her to her heart. Muriel seemed to see her conversion as the salvation not only of Ev but of David as well.
