I cannot remember that Dad gave me much advice, but I remember he regularly warned against trusting Indians, particularly in business. He also felt that it was never a bad idea to number one or two Jews among your friends as they could always be counted on in an emergency. Other advice included 'How to spot a bullshitter'. He had a lot of prejudice against bullshitters.
There were, however, bits of solid advice that he gave me which I'm pretty sure are as valid today as when I disregarded them. On booze: It's OK to drink, but don't do it in pubs and clubs. You get into bad habits, and it is in pubs that the bullshitters of the world are to be found. If you do find yourself in a pub don't flash your money about. If you are going to drink don't drink in the morning; this is looking for serious trouble. Drinking in a pub in the morning is a guaranteed road to self-destruction. How right he was!
