[Around 1980] I managed to stop drinking for 8 months while I embarked on some serious study. At the end I had to write 6 examinations. I sat for the first 5 without anything untoward happening to me but I was not well on the day of the final exam. I had been so looking forward to this day as I planned on breaking my long abstention in the afternoon. My mind went completely blank in the exam. I handed in a blank script and went and got drunk. I did not attempt writing a single word and was happy to throw away so much preparation and sacrifice to have a drink 2 hours earlier.
