The Building of the New Westgate Surgery

Westgate Surgery in Otley has been replaced with a brand new building making possible a wider range of up-to-date medical facilities. This is a pictorial record of its construction. Below on the right is a recent picture of the new building which has been in use since September 2008. There remains some finishing and tidying-up to be done around the site.

The new building is located to the right of the old surgery as shown above left, on the erstwhile premises of the Royal and Ancient Order of Buffaloes Social Club (below). Buffaloes Social Club as wasThe "Buffs" as it was locally known lay between the old surgery and the row of terrace houses seen in the background of the left-hand picture above. (The authors of this site live in that terrace, with a bird's eye view of the ongoing building work.)

When construction work began, the site looked as shown in the lower picture here. The car park at the front was at one time a bowling green, which is why it is so flat. Before that, according to hearsay, it was a market garden. Compare the picture with the one directly above it.

The pages that follow show the transformation of the site from derelict social club to modern surgery, over a period of twenty one months. Many of the photographs were taken from a dormer window in the terrace referred to above.
